With release 2019.06, there will be a new modelling experience with SAP Analytics Cloud. We are streamlining the existing SAP Analytics Cloud functionality with a new look and feel as well as some additional enhancements.
This blog is to highlight some of the changes and to introduce you to the new UI. For a demo and more detailed information on what’s new in Data and Wrangling, check out the following link to the recorded webinar given by our Product Management What’s New in Data Wrangling and Modeling.
There are two screens in the Modeler: Model and Data Management.
When you open an existing model, its content is shown on the Model screen:
The Model screen is made up of two components:
- Dimension list
The Dimension list shows you the dimensions in your model, the number of members and hierarchies in each dimension, and any attributes that have been defined for the dimensions. The account dimension will contain all measures associated to the model. You can choose between the grouped view, where dimensions are grouped according to dimension type, or a simple list view.
- Model Details pane
On the right, the Model Details pane provides a quick way of seeing the set preferences of the model, which data sources are associated to the model as well as associated objects using the model, such as stories. This new information is very helpful to see all dependencies. You will also be able to click on the list of Related Objects and it will navigate you to the object (e.g. Story) directly from the model.
When you click on a specific dimension in the dimension list, the view changes to show you detailed information about the dimension, list of its members and the Dimension Settings pane at the right.
Using the mode icons, you can choose between the list view, where dimension members and their properties are shown in a non-editable list, or the grid view, where you can make changes to the dimension’s values and properties directly in the grid. For mass changes and using copy and paste functional, the grid view is the best option.
The Dimension Settings pane shows you information about the selected dimension including:
- General Settings – Type, Name and Description
- Hierarchies associated to the dimension (there could be multiple for non-Account dimensions)
- Properties such as associated attributes
- Rights/Access will allow you to be able to turn on Data Access control that will allow you to enter data level security directly in the model
If you select a dimension member, the pane at right switches to the Member Details pane, which displays information about the selected member.
Similarly, for the Account Dimension, by click on a specific measure, you can use the list or grid to be able to also create calculations, aggregations and set formatting.
You can view and manage your hierarchies by opening the Hierarchy Maintenance screen which will allow you to edit both your level based and parent/child hierarchies.
To view a new dimension, use the back arrow and navigate back to the Model screen to click on a different dimension.
From the main application menu, you will also see new icons that have been incorporated into the modeler to be able to Delete Fact Table data as well as show any Validation errors.
Data Management screen
The Data Management screen will bring you to the area where you can manage your Draft Sources, Import and Export Jobs and Scheduling. This screen is very similar to the original modeler, so this blog will not go through any details for this area.
